The poverty rate in Jamaica stands at 16.5%, having increased in the past two
years. The result is that a larger proportion of the population now falls below
the poverty line and inequality has risen, in many instances heightening
vulnerabilities of the most-at-risk populations, including women and young
people.
9.9 percent of the population lived under the poverty line as of 2007.
Food insecurity is the idea that a country should have considerable concern with the supply of their food and resources. As Jamaica lifts its trade restrictions, foreign products flood the market. Jamaicans say locally produced food tastes better, but most still opt for the lower-priced foreign alternatives. The country's growing dependence on exports exposes it to the whims of international markets and jeopardizes its food security. Jamaica may struggle with this issue if they don't utilize the arable land they have already.

It seems like they eat quite a bit so they must have to exercise quite often in order to stay healthy.
Over 10% of Jamaica's population is underweight.
Many Jamaicans will revert to some sort of job involving the coast because there is more attraction to these areas due to sightseers and tourists. With these frequent visitors, the area and working conditions will tend to be much more sanitary than a job you might find further inland.
Many homes are poorly built and small which means they may not be able to adequately support a large family. This might be reason as to why poverty rates used to be so much higher and now they are improving.

In this article, we see Jamaican members of the caricom being very cautiously optimistic about the rapidly increasing global temperatures. These rising temperatures are causing sea levels to rise and this poses a major threat for the islands in the Caribbean which lie very susceptible to flooding and other environmental issues. This affect on the environment could be very detrimental to Jamaica as it may have an impact of domestic goods which are essential since it is so expensive to import goods.

Jamaica lies very susceptible to natural disaster, most frequently hit by hurricanes, some of which are devastating and leave many people homeless. Catholic Relief Services helped farmers who lost their crops to the flooding caused by Hurricane Emily revive their fields. In 2007, Hurricane Dean destroyed southern Jamaica. CRS provided emergency shelter, sanitation supplies and support to rebuild damaged and destroyed homes. CRS works to help those in need in all facets of life whether it be getting a solid meal on a daily basis or just providing people with somewhere to stay for a chilly night.

Every day we are asked to respond in the light of catholic social teaching in every little thing that we do. The catholic social teaching is an essential part of every Catholics lifestyles as it is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor." As Jesus did in his time, he asks that we do the same living in light of him. He wants us to show love and compassion to those who are in need of it and in this case it is the poor and starved. in many cases we see children whom are so malnourished that their physical and mental development are seriously harmed, as stated in the reading. Under God it is our responsibility to help these millions of people become better than they are turning out to be by educating, providing shelter, and food for these people in need.
The reading outlines a number of different techniques which are going to have to be used in order to help these people in need. By following these procedures we will have a better understanding of how to fulfill the catholic social teaching more often and help the lives of others drastically. "The first line of attack against poverty must be to build and sustain a healthy economy," which means the government officials are all going to exhibit the values embodied in the catholic social teaching. The article also says that "Self-help efforts among the poor should be fostered." This means there are going to have be influential people trying to motivate the poor community to help themselves out of the lifestyle of poverty. In Jamaica, eliminating poverty will be no easy task but with the help of the government, the poor, and the rest of the Jamaican community, it can be done.
